If an Australian citizen wants to visit the US, they need to apply for the relevant type of visa for their travel purposes. If the visit to the US is for business, tourism, medical or transit purposes and the stay is less than 90 days in total, they can apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation).
If the purpose of the visit for the Australian citizen to the USA is different to these reasons, for example, they want tolive, work and/or study in the US, they would be required to apply for the relevant type of visa.

To be eligible for getting a US visa from Australia, the applicant must meet the criteria for one of the available visa types. For a tourist visa, for example, the applicant would need to complete the non-immigrant visa form and provide travel details. They may be required to show proof of finances to cover accommodation while in the US.
When applying for any of the US visas, the applicant would need to be able to pay the application fee (the amount varies depending on the type of visa). They would also need a valid passport and may be required to present additional legal documents and other evidence to support their application.

What type of application form do you need?

The fee for submitting the DS-160 is $160 and this covers all of the non-petition based visa categories which includes visitor visas, student visas and visas for media and journalists.
